Arizona Probation Reform
Arizona HB 2707 rewards probation departments with savings for reducing the costs of incarceration.
Cicero Action revived and improved an earlier program that showed strong initial success in lowering crime and state spending on public safety. Working with the Department of Corrections, along with innovative leaders in both chambers, cleared the path for the reform to pass every step in the legislative process without a vote against it before being signed by the governor.
Starting with 2022 performance, local probation offices that successfully lower the percentage of people who are sent to prison will receive additional funding to expand effective programs or try innovative approaches to lowering crime.
